The Foundation’s Maritime Collection is housed in the building on 2nd Merarchias 36 & Akti Moutsopoulou. Created by the Foundation’s President, P. C. Laskaridis, the Collection comprises items related to the sea and seafarer. Besides the items on exhibition (sextants, quadrants and octants, medical instruments, items carried by ships of previous centuries, items recovered by shipwrecks, diving suits of the early twentieth century, natural marine findings, paintings and artwork), the collection includes old and rare books, kept in the Historical Library’s collections.

A very interesting and rare part of it is the archival collection of the hydrobiologist Dr. Constantinos Laskaridis, including material on ichthyology, oceanography, and especially on every area of fishing. You can find more information on this collection in our Named Collections page.

The exhibition of the Maritime Collection as well as that of the Nelson Collection are open to the public, on weekdays 09.00 to 17.00.

  • NAUTICAL INSTRUMENTS COLLECTION

The collection includes rare nautical instruments and navigation equipment, such as sextants, compasses, telescopes etc., accompanied by a series of medical instruments and drawing instruments of the 18th and the 19th centuries

  • COLLECTION OF BONE SHIP MODELS
    Those amazingly detailed models of several warship types, made of bone or ivory, were built by French prisoners of the Napoleonic wars.

  • THE SCRIMSHAWS COLLECTION
    The collection consists of engraved whale and walrus teeth, the work of 19th century whalers.

    The collection comprises items given to the Foundation on loan by the Hellenic Navy Lighthouses Service.
